Mastodon and Fediverse

Recent events (around November 2022; I won’t cover it here, look it up yourself please) have a lot of people leaving Twitter and looking for an alternative. I (Mark and Halibut Electronics) have chosen Mastodon and the Fediverse as our new Social Media Platform of choice. This means I will no longer be posting on Twitter.

If you’re interested in creating your own account, I’ve setup a public Ham Radio themed instance at https://mastodon.hams.social/ that you’re welcome to use. There are many other options as well.

You can now find my personal stream at: https://mastodon.halibut.com/@smitty and the Halibut Electronics official (read: no personal content if you’re not interested in that) at https://mastodon.halibut.com/@electronics

What the heck are “Mastodon” and “Fediverse”?

Check out this video of a presentation I gave to the Cycle 25 ham radio club on the topic:

tl,dr:

It looks and feels very similar to Twitter, but it’s federated like email. You no longer have just a user name, you are now user@domain, just like email. You can follow anyone from any other domain, just like you can send email to anyone at any domain.

There are many more details than that, but this is just a tl,dr after all. 🙂 If you want more, watch the video.

Halibut Electronics Blog on Fediverse!

I recently found a plugin that will give this WordPress blog a presence on the Fediverse, and just installed it. This post is as much a test of that integration as it is an announcement that I’m leaving Twitter and moving to Mastodon.

You should be able to follow this Blog by following https://electronics.halibut.com/@mark in your Fediverse platform of choice (such as Mastodon.)
